Family Holidays in Valencia: 10 Tips to Make the Most of It
Planning family holidays in Valencia? This sunny and welcoming city has a special rhythm that makes it perfect for slowing down, spending time together, and making lasting memories. As someone who lives here and works closely with families through my photography, I’ve gathered some favourite local tips I often share with the families I photograph. Whether you’re travelling with young kids or teenagers, these ideas will help you enjoy your family trip to Valencia to the fullest.

1. Wander Through the Historic Centre
The old town (El Carmen) is a charming blend of narrow streets, colourful façades, and hidden plazas that invite you to explore at your own pace. It’s easy to walk around and full of lovely surprises, like the quirky “cat house”, the contemporary art museum Centre del Carme (with free entry), vibrant street art, independent shops, and small fountains where kids can cool off. Stop by the Central Market in the morning for fresh fruit, local snacks, or even a quick wine tasting at lunch. For beautiful views over the city, climb the Miguelete tower or visit the Torres de Serranos, a fun way to let the kids burn off some energy while you enjoy the sights.

2. Explore Local Food (With Kids in Town)
Valencia’s food scene is full of flavour and tradition, and many places are family-friendly. In the old town, Café Infanta is a great spot for delicious tapas. For dessert, try horchata with fartons at Horchatería Daniel or Santa Catalina, or indulge in churros at Chocolatería Valor. And don’t miss out on some helado artesanal (artisan ice cream) from the many charming gelaterías scattered throughout the Ciudad Vieja neighbourhood.

3. Spend a Day at Turia Park
The former riverbed turned urban park is one of Valencia’s most beloved spaces, and a dream for families. Stretching over 9 kilometres, Turia Park is packed with playgrounds, gardens, fountains, and even an amusement park (open seasonally). It’s perfect for letting the kids run free while you relax with a drink, take a stroll, or enjoy a picnic.
Local tip: Don’t miss Gulliver Park — a giant playground shaped like the character from Gulliver’s Travels, complete with slides and climbing areas. It’s one of the most fun spots for younger children!

4. Beach Days at Malvarrosa or Patacona
Valencia’s wide sandy beaches are just 15 minutes from the city centre and ideal for families. Malvarrosa is lively and well-known, while Patacona offers a more laid-back, local feel. Both beaches have shallow waters, plenty of space to play, and beachside restaurants where you can enjoy a meal or drink with your feet in the sand.
In Summer, beaches can get quite hot and busy during the day, but from 5pm onwards, the atmosphere softens. People gather for snacks, bocadillos, and patatas bravas at chiringuitos (small bar/restaurants at the beach), while the kids play in the sand as the sun sets.
Tip: La Más Bonita at Patacona Beach is a favourite for its lovely back terrace, delicious food, and homemade cakes. If you’re near Malvarrosa Beach, I highly recommend visiting Mercabanyal or Mercader Cabanyal — two vibrant markets/food halls offering a fantastic variety of local produce, tapas, and fresh seafood. It’s a great spot to enjoy nice food in a lively and casual atmosphere, perfect for families looking to taste something different and delicious.

5. Discover the City of Arts and Sciences
This futuristic complex is iconic and full of family-friendly activities. Kids love the Oceanogràfic – Europe’s largest aquarium, and the hands-on exhibits at the Museu de les Ciències. The area is spacious, stroller-friendly, and perfect for renting bikes and riding around at a relaxed pace. It’s a great stop during your family holidays in Valencia.
(The Oceanogràfic Aquarium follows strict European Union regulations on animal care and welfare and actively participates in breeding and conservation programs, particularly for endangered species)

6. Rent Bikes and Explore the City on Two Wheels
Valencia is flat, sunny, and full of cycle paths, making it one of the most bike-friendly cities in Europe. Renting bikes is a fun and easy way for families to explore more of the city at their own pace. You can ride through Turia Park, visit the City of Arts and Sciences, or even cycle all the way to the beach. There are plenty of places to stop along the way for snacks, drinks, or playtime. If you’re travelling with younger children, many bike rental shops offer child seats or cargo bikes to keep things comfortable and safe.
Tip: Start your ride from the Torres de Serranos and head east through Turia park, it’s shaded, scenic, and leads straight to the sea passing through Ciutat de Les Arts y Ciencias.

7. A Stroll Through Ruzafa: Cafés, Shops & Creative Vibes
If you’re looking for a fun and creative area to explore, head to Ruzafa, Valencia’s most colourful and creative neighbourhood. With its lively streets, vintage shops, independent cafés, and weekend markets, it’s a great spot for the whole family to enjoy. Teenagers often love the mix of cool second-hand shops, record stores, and street art, while parents can relax with a coffee in one of the many stylish cafés. Ruzafa’s laid-back, artistic vibe makes it a refreshing contrast to the more central areas and a lovely way to spend a few hours discovering something new.
8. Take a Catamaran Trip from Valencia Port

For a unique family experience, consider a catamaran trip from Valencia Port. It’s a beautiful way to see the city from the water. The sea breeze, calm waves, and panoramic views create a peaceful setting that kids and adults will definitely enjoy. Some tours include music, snacks, or even a swim stop during the Summer months. It’s a memorable way to enjoy the Mediterranean and slow down during your family trip to Valencia.

9. Local Insider Tips: Hidden Gems You Won’t Find Everywhere
If you want to go beyond the guidebooks, check out local apps like Meetup, Get Your Guide, and Airbnb Experiences. You’ll often find locals offering unique walking tours, kids’ workshops, craft classes, or even family-friendly bike rides around the city. These hidden gems can add something extra special to your holiday.
